The future is diverse!  Here at MSP we strive to be fully inclusive in all sense of the word – developmentally, culturally, socially.  Having peer buddies is a huge piece of creating an inclusive environment, specifically for our students with special needs.  These friends help our students during speech groups, join our skill building classes to help model kindergarten readiness skills, and model appropriate play behaviors in the classroom.

How will the Peer Buddy Program help my typically developing child?

Being a peer buddy not only increases their own awareness of students with disabilities, but can further develop the peer buddies’ own social/emotional skills, be extremely motivating, and decrease their own attention-seeking behaviors. It can also help to increase leadership qualities and confidence in our typical students.  Knowledge on how to help support disabilities, be empathetic towards all types of learners in the classroom, and recognizing when a friend needs additional help can also be lasting benefits we see from our students who enroll in this program and traits they can continue to grow as they enter into inclusive elementary school settings.

How does the Peer Buddy Program help my neurodiverse or speech student?

It’s no secret that kids learn best from each other.  Since implementing a peer buddy system here at Mustard Seed, we’ve seen an increase in lasting friendships, social interactions, new skill acquisition and a decrease in challenging classroom behaviors.  With more naturalistic modeling opportunities created by one student for another it allows them to see themselves in the interaction, and it can be far more play based than when activities are strictly adult led.  Additionally, student directed support can lead to a greater understanding and honoring of learning differences for all students.
